Twitter (is) was down for 3 hours (and counting…)

Due to the people I follow on Twitter it’s my number one news source, as I discussed in a previous blog post (here), so when twitter is down, as it has been now for the last 3 hours, I have to go to several news sites to get the information I need! As it happens, it was whilst browsing the New York Times Online that I saw a headline in their technology section about Twitter being down.

Put Twitter Down into Google and you get some interesting results:

The 1st news article, from InTheNews.co.uk states that Twitter has been taken down by the company themselves due to a coordinated attack which then leads to the actual source which is the official Twitter Blog which states We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.

Ironically, as I am writing Twitter has come back online and Twitter now state on their blog: the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack.

Another result that Google threw up is IsTwitterDown.com which shows a hyperlink with the word No which takes you to the Amazon audio store and an MP3 download of the Kool and the Gang song Celebration!

The next result in Google is for this gem WhenTwitterIsDown.com which I’ll leave for your own amusement…

Twitter – Number 1 for News

Follow the right people and Twitter can be the best place for news on the internet, and indeed anywhere. As an avid fan of Formula 1 I was interested to see the results of the practice sessions for the Australian Grand Prix yesterday but was not in a position to watch or listen to then, enter Twitter.

F1 news on Twitter

F1 news on Twitter

Thanks to my following of @f1_fans, @sidepodcast, @F1Weekly and @f1fanatic_co_uk I was able to keep up to date with everything that happened in all three practice sessions throughout the day.

I was also provided with links to articles and photos should I want to peruse any tweet in further detail, which indeed I did on a few occasions. The real time, multiple reporting way that Twitter works makes it second to none as a news source, especially when the reporters are all hand chosen by us.

Who alerts us when Twitter is down?

When Gmail is down Twitter is very quick to tell us all, but what happens when Twitter is down?

Who tells us?

Who tells us?

Well, the Twitter error screen is a good indication and it wasn’t down for long. But I did miss it, enough to write this blog post, and thankfully it is up again now.

EDIT: As at 8.36pm GMT Twitter is down again has been on and off for the last 20 minutes – trouble in Twitter Town!

Visit Twitscoop & lose hours of your day!

Please be warned that visiting the following link could be detrimental to your productivity for the rest of the day! The link is Twitscoop which is a Tweet Cloud for Twitter.

Watch the words get bigger and smaller!

Watch the words get bigger and smaller!

Just in case you aren’t familiar with this kind style of representing results – the bigger the word the more popular it is on Twitter at that time. What makes this website so much fun is that the results change in real time so you can watch as certain words gain or lose popularity on Twitter – fascinating, though ultimately useless as you’ll see from the results offered up.

How much is your Twitter profile worth?

A few posts ago we talked about Rank and Statistics for your Twitter, and today it’s all about the value.

Want to buy my profile?

Want to buy my profile?

Head over to Tweet Value and see how much your Twitter Profile is worth. As you can see, mine is worth a mind numbing $35, which I may need to cash in if the recession continues. Any buyers?

Just a few other comparison values:

Stephen Fry – $5552
BBC Click – £2708
Wil Wheaton – $2536
Jonathan Ross – $866

Pimp My Twitter!

Just so we are clear, going forward this will NOT be known as PMT. Ok, now we have that cleared up I suggest you head over to Free Twitter Designer and customise your Twitter layout, so you can stand out from the crowd.

It’s not perfect, the image quality is pretty shoddy with lots of bleed, especially around text. But hey, what do you expect from a free service and nobody wants to hours while high-res images upload.

The creative process.

The creative process.

If you go to my Twitter profile you will see my quick attempt to brighten up my profile. A splurge here, a squirl there and the all important, though unfortunately not clickable, website address for this very blog.

It’ll be interesting to see if down the line Twitter do open up customisation possibilities a bit more, much like MySpace, and allow people full access to place links, images and maybe even advertising.

Twitter Ranking & Statistics

Ever wondered what your twitter Rank is? I certainly have, ok, so it occured to me once, juts a few monutes ago. Google led me to Twitter Rank where upon I was told that rank is 8.65 which is approximately 23.47 percentile. In other words over 75% of Twitter users are higher than me on this scale.

To put that into perspective, here are a few other people’s (that I follow) Twitter Ranks:

Tech Crunch – 210.19 (99.84 percentile)
Wil Wheaton – 190.16 (99.41 percentile)
Wossy – 179.07 (98.99 percentile)
Stuff.TV – 74.42 (78.59 percentile)

The top 50 list can be found here and the FAQ which explains it all can be found here.

Now on to my favourite, stats! Head over to Tweet Stats and find out all sorts of fascinating information about your Twitter habits, good and bad.

February has been busy

February has been busy

Though my first Twitter account was opened in March 2007, and this one has been running since last August, it’s only this month that I’ve really become more active as Twitter has gained popularity and I have found more people I want to follow.

When I Tweet

When I Tweet

Looking like a TV guide it shows when I Tweet, which is gone in to more detail with the following graphs…

Tweeting at weekends

Tweeting at weekends

I do more interesting things at weekends so it makes sense that I Tweet. While my little boy sleeps, I Tweet!

Tweet with cereal?

Tweet with cereal?

6am is my most regular Tweeting time which is when I generally wake up and find lots of things to Tweet about – with lots of the accounts I follow being American I have lots to catch up on by breakfast.

The Big Spud!

The Big Spud!

My replies, mostly to BigSpud who is one of my best friends – ahhh!

How I Tweet

How I Tweet

This one will change pretty rapidly as I have only been using Twitterific for a week or so and tend to do most of my Tweeting on my iPod Touch. When the Ovi Store opens in May I expect there will be a mobile application for my Nokia 5800 that I will use for a lot of Tweets from then on.

It's all great!

It's all great!

My top five words are: new, work, today, great, good – that’s pretty positive! Apparently I’ve had 7 twooshes, which is a 140 character Tweet!

So, head over to Tweet Stats and find out how you Tweet.
