On Monday I had the great pleasure of getting home from work to find our internet was down. This happens from time to time and I figured it would be back in a few minutes. To my dismay dinner came and went, but still no internet.
I tried calling my broadband provider, Talk Talk, but their marvelous system led me down a route which concluded with me being cut off, on all 3 of my attempts!
At this point I started feeling very much like I was cut off from the outside world, not having been online since I left work 2.5 hours ago. There was an extenuating circumstance though; I had an eBay auction due to end which was of slightly modest value, at least compared to the other 99p listings that had ended earlier that day! To not be able to see its progress or see if there were any queries felt very limiting, and I didn’t like it!
There were also times where I would grab my iPod Touch or mobile phone (Nokia 5800) to Tweet, but alas, then I’d remember I had no internet connection. This did highlight my need to sign up for a web bolt-on for my mobile phone – with a 1 year old in the house we quite often check websites like babycentre.co.uk for advice.
In this day and age it’s not surprising to miss being online, but to the extent I experienced on Monday, well that was quote an eye opener and to just how attached to the internet I am. I’d say there is a definite possibility if me being addicted to Twitter!
The connection came back just as we were going to bed so I binged on Twitter updates, emails and eBay activity – it felt good!
As an aside this post is the first created on the iPod Touch WordPress application so I apologise for any spelling errors, I’ll check when I am at a computer next.
First off, apologies for the lack of posts – the Formula 1 season started and I decided to start a new blog for that as Formula 1 posts were taking over at A Little Less Geek. Unfortunately I got so wrapped up in the new blog (McLaren Fan Blog) that I neglected this one! To make matters worse I have just started a 3rd blog which can be seen here: The Beach Boys Discography Project. I promise, more posts on Less Geek from now on though – so much going on so it’d be rude not to!
Ever since I was a little boy I used to watch The World’s Strongest Man (WSM) with my Dad as an annual tradition around Christmas/New Year. I started as a Geoff Capes fan and cheered him in his battles against the mighty Bill Kazmaier and Jon Pall Sigmarsson (Viking Power!). In the mid 90s I was a fan of Manfred Hoeberl and his freakishly large arms, though it was Magnus Ver Magnusson who dominated that decade! In the 2000s I relied on my half Polish bloodline to get behind ‘The Dominator’ Mariusz Pudzianowski who has just last year broken the previous record of 4 WSM wins (set by Icelanders Jon Pall Sigmarsson and Magnus Ver Magnusson) to become the only man to ever win 5 WSM competitions, and there may be more to come!
Around the time of the latest WSM they showed a documentary on TV called ’30 Years of Pain’ which was a look back at the history of WSM and the extraordinary competitors involved. I’ve watched it 3 times so far, as a longtime fan of WSM I found it utterly fascinating. Just yesterday I was pointed in the direction of the trailer for what I know now is the DVD of the aforementioned documentary, with extra bonus footage that I didn’t see on TV, AND the making of World’s Strongest Man! Go back to January and I was trawling Amazon looking for WSM DVDs so news of this DVD is awesome news for me, and any WSM fans out there! It’ll be out on June 1st according to the trailer, so not long to wait. I’ll be picking one up for both my Dad and myself – nostalgia central! I just hope there are more WSM DVDs to come.
Here is said trailer on Youtube:
Let’s tackle the first one – it has been announced that Skype will indeed be available for the iPhone, and as a free application at that!
Though it has been possible to Skype on an iPhone via 3rd party tools, it’s quite a revelation that it will officially be available on the iPhone now. Along with the recent software upgrade announcement (iPhone OS 3.0), it seems like iPhone is finally acknowledging that they may have serious competition in the market.
For some such as myself who’s Mother lives in Spain, being able to Skype without using a laptop is fantastic news. The only setback is me having a 1st generation iPod Touch so I’ll have to use earphones, but still, that’s quite a revelation.
For those people with iPhones and 2nd generation iPod Touch devices it opens up a whole new world of cost free telecommunications, especially considering Play have just started selling the iPhone SIM FREE! This has been confirmed by Apple and is not just wishful thiking on Play’s part!
That’s right, for the bargain price of £599.99 you can go to Play.com and get yourself a sim free iPhone. Add that to official Skype functionality and you have quite the non-O2 proposition. Of course you need a Wi-Fi connection because one of the benefits of having an iPhone on O2 is the unlimited use of Wi-Fi hotspots and mobile internet. You could always make all your calls in McDonalds!
Those with mobile contracts from other networks that do include mobile internet could find this a very tempting offer and there is always the cheaper option of the 8GB model for just £549.99!
Of course the appearance of this version of the iPhone sim free on Play just adds fuel to the rumours that there will be a new iPhone by summer.
The visitors to this blog has been increasing massively over the past few days and I have just found out why. For some reason an image I posted in a blog post on March 1st of the Nokia N97 on March 1st is the first image that comes up when you do a Google image search for Nokia N97.
The sharp increase in traffic to this blog
For an off the radar blog like this I find that very bizarre. Word Press must be the most Google friendly website on the interweb, and if you do a search for the Nokia N97 on Word Press, the first two results are posts on this blog: see? Must be something in the way I write my blogs that search functionality likes! It’s part of my job to optimise SEO for our websites at work, maybe it’s a subconscious skill I have developed, ;o)
Pocket Link are reporting that O2 are not ruling out the Nokia N97. In an earlier blog I wrote about O2 and Orange not wanting to stock the Nokia N97 due to it being pre-loaded with Skype.
O2 backing down?
If I were a betting man I’d bet that O2 will most definitely be stocking the Nokia N97, after realising how customer unfriendly their previous stance was. Nothing from Orange yet, but they have to follow suit now, or stick out as the only operator resisting modern technology – not something customers will find endearing.
As if Google Earth wasn’t impressive enough, now you can take a trip round Mars courtesy of Google Mars! If you don’t have the Google Earth application downloaded to your computer you can still get a pretty great bird’s eye view of The Red Planet.
The Red Planet
However, if you do have the Google Earth application, this is where the fun starts as you get a proper 3D look at a planet which is many millions of miles away from where we are currently situated, tapping away on our keyboards!
There are points of interest which you can reach with the click of the mouse, such as geographical marvels and space landings. I’ve only just begun to explore this amazing new treat from Google but I can imagine many an hour will be spent
looking for aliens exploring Mars.
